The Centre, in partnership with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), announced a commitment of $1.8M over three years to support a food security pilot across the province. While the goal will be to embed food prescribing into the newly established Family Care Teams, connected with the Health Accord, this pilot will take place in already well-established Family Resource Centres (FRCs).
About the Pilot
- Run through 16 Family Resource Centres, around 250 to 300 households/year will receive a grocery gift card or food box
- Primary focus is to address the social determinants of health, aligned with NL Health Accord, and a key objective is to address food access and food insecurity to improve health outcomes
- Households involved in the pilot may also benefit from new programs as part of the Poverty Reduction Plan, specifically:
-
- All will benefit from the increase to the NL portion of the Canada Child Benefit (which will increase 300% over 2 years)
- Some will also receive the early childhood nutrition supplement
